The Sespe Wilderness and the Parkfield Grade

We spent most of this weekend exploring the remote byways of the Los Padres National Forest–specifically the Sespe Wilderness and Sespe Gorge–and then headed north to the Parkfield Grade.  The day began gray and foggy, and then cleared mostly except for a rare summer rainstorm we drove through north of Taft on Highway 33.

And finally, this fellow, whom I almost stepped on while taking the picture above.  Fortunately, he didn’t strike (also didn’t rattle)–and this pic wasn’t taken with a zoom lens.  I’m glad the picture turned out okay, because I only snapped one before walking very quickly in the other direction.

  1. Beautiful! Even the rattle snake. Glad you and he parted ways before anyone got hurt.
